Career

Celebrity model Phoebe Cates became Hollywood’s “IT” girl in the 1980s. Teen girls aspired to look like her, and boys wanted to date her. The daughter of a Russian-Jewish father and a Chinese-Russian mother, her unusual features set her apart from other young models. She appeared on Seventeen, Elle, British Vogue, and Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine covers during her celebrity peak.

Her beauty and fame as an icon have lasted for decades. Season 3 of “Stranger Things” featured a reference to Phoebe Cates as the definition of beauty when Dustin compared his new girlfriend, Suzie, to Phoebe Cates, only hotter. The scene in a red bikini where she stripped her top off and seduced Judge Reinhold, the brother of her closest friend, in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” keeps her forever a teenager.

After multiple 1990s film roles, Phoebe Cates disappeared from the entertainment scene.

Phoebe debuted in a film with a hot male teen idol.

The 10-year-old model, Phoebe, switched to dancing. She studied at Julliard to become a professional. Phoebe resumed modeling after an injury. She became one of the most prominent teenage models, along with Brooke Shields and an unknown Whitney Houston.

Producers wanted Phoebe to star in teenage movies right away. Her debut picture was “Paradise” with “Eight is Enough” star Willie Aames. This copycat of Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins’ “Blue Lagoon,” gave Phoebe her film debut. The film followed David and Sarah, two teens who went from Baghdad to Damascus via caravan. A slave agent named Jackal wanted Sarah in his harem. While Sarah and David escaped, their group was killed.

The film ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ made Cates famous.

As Linda, the quick girl who knew all about boys and sex and intended to teach her best friend Stacy Hamilton about love and life in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” Phoebe became a sensation overnight. After 1982, many teen movies tried to emulate her slow-motion seduction of Judge Reinhold.

She appeared with “ER” stars Anthony Edwards, Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, and Nicolas Cage. In a 1982 interview, Phoebe said, “I was just 17 when I did my nude sequences in “Paradise.” The inability to justify them made them more severe and challenging. The “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” topless sequence was humorous, making it simple. Stripping is required for a job in this industry. Why not flaunt your gorgeous body?”

Phoebe got ‘Gremlins’ due to her strong connection with her co-star.

Phoebe was cast in 1984’s “Gremlins,” but Steven Spielberg didn’t like her because of her first two films.

But Phoebe’s chemistry with Billy, played by Zach Galligan, convinced Spielberg to cast her as his girlfriend Kate in the film about a guy who acquired a mogwai for his son. The man was forbidden from feeding the beast after midnight, near water, or in bright light. The father broke those restrictions, and a group of mogwai-like gremlins destroyed the family’s town. The famous filmmaker reportedly discovered before filming that his male star had a crush on Cates.

Phoebe married an older man later.

Phoebe met Broadway actor Kevin Kline in 1982 while auditioning for “The Big Chill”. After meeting at New York’s Public Theater by happenstance, the couple started dating in 1985. Kevin told Entertainment Weekly, When I met Phoebe, I thought, She’s too glad to be with me. Her enthusiasm for life is excessive.

Besides their 16-year age gap, the couple had other differences. Phoebe quit high school to model and succeed in teen films. The couple met after Kline graduated from Julliard and won two Tony Awards for his Broadway performances. Phoebe was finishing her film career when they married in 1989. She completed her cinematic career with 1994’s historical comedy “Princess Caraboo” after appearing in “Heart of Dixie” and “Shag”. She and Kevin had two children, Owen Joseph Kline (1991) and Greta Simone (1994). Owen directs films, and Greta became Frankie Cosmos to pursue her music career.

Cates was busy even when she wasn’t acting.

Phoebe told Donny Deutch for “The Big Idea” in 2005 that she always wanted to create a retail business, but she never took the step to do so. That wish came true when Blue Tree, a Madison Avenue store selling apparel, jewelry, perfume, books, and plush animals, opened.
